Is Online Therapy Effective?

Online therapy is becoming an increasingly popular option for addressing the emotional challenges and life experiences we face daily. However, the obvious question is: Is it as effective as in-person therapy? Will I be progressing as quickly as I could with this format?

Although online therapy offers convenience and accessibility, it still generates skepticism in many people, and understandably so: after all, it’s still something quite new, and it’s normal for it to raise doubts. According to several studies (Valero, 2003; Baker & Ray, 2011; Franco-Martín & Monardes, 2016), conducted over many years (since 2000, when this modality began to gain popularity), online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy. However, it is true that it is not recommended in certain cases, such as with adolescents under 16 years old. If this applies to you, we suggest seeking an in-person professional. We are also happy to recommend professionals who work in-person and might be a good fit for you—just send us an email.

These studies have shown that whether sessions are conducted in person or online does not impact the improvement of patients. The most important factor was found to be the qualification of the professional. In our case, after six years of training (and with the conviction to continue this throughout our careers to always offer updated, informed, and evidence-based therapy), we provide therapy aligned with the protocols recommended by the scientific community and the Official College of Psychologists, to which we both belong.

Additionally, we must emphasize that the fact that online therapy offers greater comfort, accessibility, and flexibility ensures the continuity and consistency of sessions. This is a key factor in the success of therapy. It also has the advantage that conducting sessions from your home often enhances feelings of safety, vulnerability, and intimacy, which are fundamental in creating the optimal psychological space.

We know that reading this on the website of online psychologists may make you think we are somewhat biased toward the benefits of this modality. That’s why we recommend the following articles, so you can form your own opinion:

How Do I Know if Online Therapy Is Right for Me?

Online therapy is an increasingly popular option with proven results. It is just as effective as in-person therapy for treating anxiety, depression, stress, and other emotional challenges.

Considering this, online therapy offers the flexibility to access your sessions from anywhere, adapting to your lifestyle. If you prioritize the convenience of avoiding travel and have a private space to speak freely, it could be the perfect solution for you. On the other hand, if you often find it difficult to express your emotions and feel vulnerable, being in a safe space, such as your bedroom or living room, may encourage emotional openness and help you feel more comfortable sharing difficult experiences.

Another major advantage is that you can try it out and see how you feel. Just like with in-person therapy, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident with the professional guiding you. The relationship between the patient and therapist is crucial for the success of the treatment, and if at any point you don’t feel at ease, you always have the option to change therapists.

While online therapy offers the flexibility to access sessions from anywhere and adapts to your pace, what matters most is that you feel comfortable with the person providing the therapy. Sometimes it may take a couple of sessions to see if you connect with the therapist’s style and if you feel comfortable talking about your emotions in this format. If at any point you feel that the therapy is not what you need, you can change therapists without any problem.

Trying online therapy allows you to explore this modality without any commitment, ensuring that you find the right space for your emotional well-being. Remember that, at the end of the day, what matters most is that you feel well-supported in your process.
